Spring 2013 Salsa Intermediate Performing Team
LUIS ENRIQUE TIERRABLANCA (KIKE)
Enrique was born in Michoacan, Mexico and currently lives in Santa Rosa, CA. He is currently a Santa Rosa Junior College student and works part-time. Enrique has being dancing Salsa since early 2009, and has been with Santa Rosa Salsa since 2010. He was drawn to performing when he saw a performance by the Santa Rosa Salsa group. His intention for joining the team was to perform in from of a live audience and overcome his fear of a public demonstration. Besides Salsa, Enrique enjoys social dancing to Quebradita and Banda.
Joel Eduardo Cruz was born in Healdsburg, California, and has remained in Sonoma County. Due to his Hispanic background, dancing has always been a part of his life, and his family members began teaching him various styles of Latin dance, such as Cumbia and Merengue, at a very young age. When he was 12-years old Joel began taking interest in other forms of music and dance; he joined Ballet Folklorico Sarita, a local, traditional, Mexican dance group, and Windsor Bloco, a Brazilian-style drum and dance ensemble. In his sophomore year Joel joined the Windsor High Dance Team, which emphasized mostly hip-hop. Due to his mother's life long dream to learn to dance salsa, Joel agreed to take a class with her, and discovered that he enjoyed this new style of dance just as much as all the others. Now a senior in high school, Joel has been with Santa Rosa Salsa for a year, both performing on their intermediate dance team, as well as helping teach the Santa Rosa Salsa Kid's Performing Team. Joel's favorite thing about Santa Rosa Salsa is the family feeling he gets at all the events and practices.
Kathy was born and raised in New York. She works as a teacher in Sonoma County and has been dancing 3 years. When she began taking salsa lessons with Santa Rosa Salsa she had no performing or partner dancing experience. She began taking lessons because a friend invited her and she thought it would be fun to try something new at this point in her life. Boy is she glad she did! The teachers have been so patient, kind and they make dancing with the team so much fun. "When I first began I was so nervous about dancing with strangers. I now know that strangers are just friends you haven't met yet. I am so happy I went to that first class and I can't imagine life without dancing."
Kevin has always enjoyed informal dancing to many types of music, but his first introduction to salsa dancing wasn't until he took a two week trip to Costa Rica just after graduating high school. He has always loved Salsa music and played a fair bit of Latin jazz in his high school jazz band (on trumpet). Kevin took a long break from any kind of formal dancing, and then finally decided to get back into salsa in August of 2011 with the encouragement of some friends. He has been hooked ever since and has been dancing salsa for over a year now. Kevin chose to stick with Santa Rosa Salsa because after taking a few lessons with Jesus and Irene, he found he loved their fun, interesting and easy-going style of teaching. Kevin is a former member of the 3S Bachata dance team, and is currently on the Salsa Caoba dance team. Kevin has also assisted in teaching a handful of Salsa classes, which he admits was a challenging, but rewarding experience. Overall, dancing and performing with Santa Rosa Salsa has given Kevin more confidence and taught him that if you put in the time and are committed, you can reach goals that you once thought were impossible to achieve. Besides dancing Kevin also enjoys biking, snowboarding, rock climbing, watching movies, and playing music. Kevin currently lives in Santa Rosa, CA, but grew up in nearby Sebastopol.
Kristen was born in Honolulu, Hawaii and raised in the California Easy Bay. As a recent graduate of Sonoma State University, Kristen currently resides in Sonoma County, helping coordinate and organize Latin events for Santa Rosa Salsa. Kristen has always had a passion for dance, and since the 2nd grade, was involved in Filipino Cultural Folk Dancing and amateur Hip-Hop. Kristen began her journey with Santa Rosa Salsa in November 2011, and continues to dance with and assist Santa Rosa Salsa in local events and happenings.
Milinda was born in San Francisco and has lived in Santa Rosa for many years. She is a Registered Nurse who began social dancing about 12 years ago, and enjoys dancing salsa, West Coast swing, Argentine tango, and zydeco. She chose Santa Rosa Salsa when she was looking for a supportive dance group. She has found training as a part of a team to be an inspirational experience. The hard work and commitment and support of the team members and instructors motivate each person to do their best. “I honestly didn’t expect to like performing but I thought it would be the best way to really improve my dancing skills. I was surprised that I had so much fun on stage!”
